Current Ditch Maintenance Projects
Public Advisory: Poison Hemlock
Poison Hemlock is present in our area and is often found in ditches where it thrives due to saturated soils. All parts of this non-native, toxic plant are poisonous, including the leaves, stems, seeds, and roots. However, the toxins must either be ingested or enter the body through the eyes, nasal passages, or cuts in the skin to induce poisoning. Poison Hemlock can be mistaken as Queen Anne's Lace or Wild Carrot, but the tell-tale difference are the purple markings on the stems of Poison Hemlock. The Lucas SWCD is managing any Poison Hemlock found growing in maintenance ditches with herbicide and mowing with the proper equipment and safety protocols. Learn more. |
