Lawn Management

What we apply to our lawns can become potential sources of water pollution if not done carefully and correctly. How we manage and maintain our lawns can also adversely affect water quality. Proper lawn management, with water quality in mind, will not only prevent possible pollution but also result in a healthier lawn for you and your family to enjoy.

1. Follow the 4Rs of Fertilizer Application

To protect water quality and improve lawn health, apply fertilizer using the 4Rs:

Right Rate – Apply only the amount your lawn needs. Overapplication leads to runoff and pollution.
Right Time – Fertilize during the growing season, when grass can best absorb nutrients.
Right Place – Keep fertilizer off sidewalks, driveways, and waterways.
Right Source – Choose the right type of fertilizer for your grass and soil needs.

Soil testing is key! Before fertilizing, test your soil to determine what nutrients your lawn actually needs. This helps avoid unnecessary or harmful applications.

2. Mow High
Keep grass blades 3 inches or longer. Taller grass shades soil, reduces weed growth, and improves drought tolerance.

3. Mulch Your Clippings
Leave grass clippings on the lawn. They return nutrients to the soil, reduce the need for fertilizer, and improve soil health.

4. Water Wisely
Water deeply and less often. Deep watering encourages strong root growth. Avoid frequent, shallow watering that weakens grass and wastes water.
